In an attempt to modernize its postal system, the Spanish government in 1818 decided to use homing pigeons as an air mail service. Outfitting over fifty birds with small messages, they were released to return to their home lofts which were scattered across different parts of the country. However, the entire operation turned into a comical disaster when each bird got lost, ultimately nullifying the new-age postal system before it even started. It’s now known as one of the most epic failures in history, a situation of literally ‘putting all your eggs in one basket’, or in this case, ‘putting all your messages on homing pigeons’!
